At the end of his stay in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, provided an update on the progress of the disengagement plan for the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC. Speaking to the press on Friday, September 20, 2024 in Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, the UN number two made a point of clarifying that it has never been agreed, either by the UN or by the Congolese authorities, that the mission will have to leave Congolese soil by the "fateful" date of December 31, 2024, calling this a "rumor."
